Leadership is defined as the relationship in which one person influences others to work together to reach a desired level of achievement. If other is no follower, there is no leader.

A leader is an individual who influences and guides the efforts and work of a group of persons who are known as followers. Leadership indicates the ability of an individual to maintain good interpersonal relations with followers and motivate them to contribute to achieving organizational objectives.

  • Transformational leader- It is given by James Burns (1978). It is applied in leadership as it is the abilities that allow the leader to recognize the change to create a vision to guide that change. It involves bringing valuable and positive change in the followers and inspire them to transcend their own self- interest for the good of the organizations.(higher level)(top line growth)
  • Transactional leader- It is given by Adams. It involves routine regimented activities, assigning work, evaluating performance, making decisions and so on. Basically for Management ( lower level) ( bottom line growth and traditional)
  • A person having more authority but lacking leadership qualities may be less effective as compared to a person with less authority but high degree of leadership Qualities.
  • Formal leader – Autocratic type as he centralizes the decision making power in himself.
  • Informal leader- Participative and democratic, he decentralizes the decision making power with the subordinates.
  • Leadership motivates employees, create confidence and build morale. (Attitudes of employees)

LEADERSHIP QUALITIES

INTELLIGENCE: leader should have a high level of intelligence with sound educational and technical background.

EMOTIONAL STABILITY: a leader should be emotionally stable. He should not lose temper at any stage.

UNDERSTANDING HUMAN BEHAVIOUR: A leader should possess a deep understanding of human behavior, emotions, needs, etc. and he should be able to deal with people.

UNDERSTANDING THE VIEWS OF OTHERS: The leader should understand the views of others. If he does all the things in his own way he may lose the support of others.

MOTIVATING THE FOLLOWERS: It is not enough if the leader is self-motivated. He should also know how to motivate his followers.

INITIATIVE AND CREATIVE ABILITY: The leader should take initiative because he has to take lead to do work and then only others will follow. The leader should have creative ability.

JUDGING ABILITY: Leaders should be able to judge anything. Then only the leader can anticipate the response to the actions and decisions.

RESPONSIBILITY & DECISION MAKING: A leader lead from the front by taking the responsibilities and must be a decision-maker.

GUIDANCE: A leader should be a good guide to his subordinates. He should tell and demonstrate the ways of doing work.

PERSONALITY: The leader should have an attractive and pleasing personality.

HONEST: Leaders should be honest, sincere, fair, and reasonable in his dealings with his subordinates.
